Following the end of the European Union's transition period under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, crypto exchanges are continuing to adjust their stablecoin services, while holders of non-authorized stablecoins such as USDT face fewer options for transferring or converting their assets.

OKX Europe announced on July 20 that it has introduced a new feature allowing customers in the European Economic Area (EEA) to deposit USDT onto its MiCA-licensed platform and convert it into USDC, one of the stablecoins authorized under MiCA. The company said the conversion is optional and can be completed whenever users choose.

The move comes as many exchanges across Europe have restricted USDT deposits or automatically converted customer balances into MiCA-compliant stablecoins following the conclusion of the regulatory transition period.

According to OKX Europe, the new process enables users to transfer existing USDT holdings to its regulated exchange before deciding when to convert them into USDC. The company noted that USDC is among the most actively traded MiCA-authorized stablecoins in European markets, allowing converted assets to be traded or exchanged into euros.

"Many USDT holders in Europe have faced either blocked deposits or automatic conversions imposed by exchanges," said Erald Ghoos, CEO of OKX Europe. "Our approach gives users the flexibility to determine when they convert their holdings while remaining within the crypto ecosystem."

The announcement reflects the broader restructuring of Europe's stablecoin market under MiCA, which establishes a licensing framework for crypto-asset issuers and service providers operating across the European Union. Stablecoins that do not meet the regulation's authorization requirements are gradually being removed from trading and payment services offered by regulated platforms.

As implementation of MiCA progresses, exchanges are increasingly introducing migration tools designed to help customers move from non-compliant digital assets to regulated alternatives while maintaining access to crypto markets.

OKX is a global fintech company providing cryptocurrency trading services, digital asset infrastructure, and blockchain-based wallet products. The company operates under regulatory licenses in multiple jurisdictions, including the European Economic Area (EEA), the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Australia. It also publishes monthly Proof of Reserves reports as part of its transparency initiatives.
