London, October 20, 2025 — Network services provider RETN has launched Flex IX, a new wholesale connectivity product that integrates Remote Internet Exchange (IX) access and IP Transit within a single service.
According to RETN’s internal analysis, a significant portion of bandwidth capacity at peering and interconnection points — estimated at around 70 percent — often remains unused when peers are inactive. Flex IX is designed to address this inefficiency by allowing unused IX bandwidth to be automatically converted into IP Transit. The setup enables network operators to use their full purchased capacity without managing separate services or contracts.
The combined service also allows bandwidth to exceed the committed rate when required and provides operational resilience. In the event of an outage involving a peering partner or IX, traffic can automatically reroute over transit connections, depending on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) configuration.
Flex IX is available through RETN’s Remote IX portfolio, which includes major Internet Exchanges such as AMS-IX (Amsterdam), BBIX (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore), BCIX (Berlin), BIX (Budapest), DE-CIX (Frankfurt), DTEL-IX (Kyiv), ESpanix (Madrid), France-IX (Paris), INEX (Dublin), JPNAP (Tokyo), JPIX (Tokyo), LINX (London), MIX (Milan), Netnod (Stockholm), and VIX (Vienna).
RETN Chief Executive Tony O’Sullivan said the new service is intended to improve the efficiency of network capacity use and simplify operations for carriers and internet service providers. Product Manager William Manzione added that Flex IX was developed to streamline capacity management and reduce the administrative complexity associated with maintaining separate IX and transit arrangements.
