Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced the launch of a strategic global collaboration with leading industry partners to accelerate the development and global deployment of 6G technology. The initiative was unveiled at MWC Barcelona 2026 and outlines a milestone-driven roadmap targeting commercial 6G systems beginning in 2029.
6G is being designed as an AI-native system built on three core pillars: hyper-connectivity, wide-area sensing and high-performance computing. The next-generation network is expected to incorporate intelligent wireless technologies with integrated sensing, virtualized and cloud-based RAN architectures, AI-driven network automation and enhanced edge and centralized data centers to support emerging AI workloads.
The 6G system is expected to enable new AI-powered services such as context-aware data applications, low-altitude aviation and ground traffic control, and large-scale data analytics. It will also deliver higher efficiency and performance for next-generation agentic consumer and enterprise devices and communications applications. Industry experts view 6G as a generational opportunity to drive innovation and growth through the convergence of wireless technology, advanced computing and AI.
Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, said 6G goes beyond the next evolution of wireless technology and represents a foundational shift toward distributing intelligence across devices, edge and cloud environments.
“6G will enable network operators to evolve into AI-driven enterprises,” Amon said. “The transition to 6G requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem. Through this alliance, we will align investment and technological innovation toward delivering commercial 6G systems starting in 2029.”
The collaboration focuses on three key architectural domains: devices, networks and cloud infrastructure. Participating companies aim to advance 6G into an intelligent AI-native device and network platform by accelerating the development of essential standards and conducting early system validation.
Pre-commercial demonstrations of 6G-compliant devices and network systems are planned for 2028, along with the establishment of common industry benchmarks to assess readiness. Global interoperable commercial 6G systems are expected to be introduced in phases beginning in 2029.
Qualcomm, long recognized for its leadership in global wireless standardization, will work with partners through standardization bodies and early-stage technology development to build the technical foundation required to transition 6G from concept to commercial reality.
