LG Energy Solution is accelerating its companywide artificial intelligence transformation (AX) as part of a broader push to drive productivity innovation and strengthen competitiveness in the global battery market.
In a CEO message delivered to employees on April 13, CEO Kim Dong-myung described AI transformation as a “mission-critical priority directly tied to survival,” outlining a strategy to secure differentiated competitiveness through AI adoption. He emphasized the need to move beyond scale-driven competition and shift toward a model centered on technological capabilities and talent.
“Competing solely on production volume has clear limits in the global battery market,” Kim said. “We must reshape the competitive landscape by maximizing our core assets and human capabilities through AX.”
He highlighted the company’s patent portfolio, accumulated business experience, and skilled workforce as key competitive strengths, noting that combining these assets with AI would create significant synergies.
Reflecting this strategy, LG Energy Solution has raised its productivity improvement target from 30% by 2030 to 50% by 2028. The move is seen as a proactive response to competitors increasing investments in dedicated AI organizations, with the goal of widening the performance gap.
To support its AX initiatives, the company is strengthening internal systems and governance. Kim is personally leading a monthly AI Governance Committee to review AI adoption progress, security issues, and organizational changes. LG Energy Solution also plans to gradually expand the implementation of its enterprise AI platform, starting with non-sensitive technology areas.
In parallel, the company is significantly expanding AI training programs for employees to build internal capabilities.
Addressing concerns about job displacement, Kim stressed that AI is not intended to replace workers but to reduce inefficiencies and allow employees to focus on higher-value tasks. He noted that individuals who can define and structure problems effectively will be better positioned to leverage AI.
“AX is a continuous process of trial and improvement,” Kim said. “Through this journey, we aim to reshape the competitive environment and build a level of competitiveness that cannot be easily replicated.”
