Sumsub and Chainlink connect investor verification with transfer controls as private-market tokenization moves beyond digital ownership records

Alternative asset manager Caliber said on August 24 that it has introduced reusable on-chain investor credentials for PURE Pickleball & Padel, the first real estate investment tokenized on its platform. The offering uses Sumsub’s identity-verification technology and Chainlink’s Automated Compliance Engine (ACE) to connect blockchain-based ownership records with the compliance requirements of regulated private markets.
Investors can choose between a tokenized digital ownership certificate held in a digital wallet and a conventional paper certificate. The token digitally represents an investor’s existing interest in the Scottsdale, Arizona, real estate project and operating business. It does not alter the underlying asset, ownership rights or applicable offering documents.

Before issuing a token, Sumsub conducts know-your-customer (KYC), anti-money-laundering (AML) and sanctions checks. It then creates a programmable accredited-investor credential, known as CCID, within Chainlink ACE, allowing ownership and transfer restrictions to be applied according to the investor’s verified status.

The credential is designed for reuse in future tokenized offerings, removing the need to repeat the full verification process for each investment. Sumsub has previously connected verified profiles with the Solana Attestation Service and Linea’s Verax Attestation Service, while the Caliber project applies the model to regulated private real estate rather than crypto-native assets.

Caliber CEO Chris Loeffler said the project connects tokenization technology with “a real asset, a real investor experience and a real operating business.” He emphasized that the initiative changes how private real estate ownership is recorded and administered, rather than what investors own.

Caliber plans to expand the model across additional offerings, beginning with approximately $100 million in managed assets. PURE Pickleball & Padel serves as the first operational test of whether identity verification, compliance procedures and blockchain-based ownership records can function within a common private-market infrastructure.

The significance of the project lies less in replacing a paper certificate with a token than in making investor eligibility portable and and programmable. Private assets cannot circulate as freely as cryptocurrencies because accreditation requirements, sanctions controls and transfer restrictions must be enforced whenever ownership changes. Reusable credentials could provide a way to carry verified investor status across compatible offerings while preserving the controls required for regulated assets.

The system is designed to reduce repeated verification and support the administration of private-market ownership, although its operational efficiency has yet to be demonstrated across multiple offerings. Its broader value will depend on whether issuers, compliance providers and trading platforms adopt interoperable standards rather than developing credentials that work only within individual platforms.

Tokenization also does not guarantee liquidity. A digital ownership record can improve visibility, administration and transfer processing, but an active secondary market still requires eligible buyers, approved trading venues, regulatory permission and reliable price discovery. Any improvement in liquidity therefore remains an expectation rather than an established result.

The Caliber offering reflects a more practical phase of real-world asset tokenization, focused on compliance and transaction infrastructure instead of the token itself. For regulated assets, the decisive layer may ultimately be the system that determines who is permitted to own and transfer an investment—not simply the blockchain on which that ownership is recorded.
