Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) to strengthen technical cooperation in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs), the company said on March 3.
The agreement was signed in Singapore on March 1 and marks the first nuclear cooperation MOU between a Singaporean government agency and a South Korean nuclear energy company.
Under the MOU, the two sides will jointly explore the potential application of SMRs in Singapore, collaborate on nuclear workforce development, and share technical information and best practices in the nuclear sector.
The partnership is seen as an expansion of bilateral economic ties — traditionally centered on trade and investment — into the future energy domain.
Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority, said that for a small country with limited domestic energy resources, it is critical to evaluate all possible options to strengthen energy security and resilience during the low-carbon transition.
“Advanced nuclear technologies have significant potential as a source of clean energy,” Puah said. “Collaboration with KHNP will enhance our understanding of SMR technology and support our careful assessment of nuclear energy’s suitability.”
Jeon Dae-wook, Acting President and CEO of KHNP, said the company has responded to global energy transition trends based on its extensive operational experience and technical expertise in nuclear power.
“As a responsible partner, we will actively support EMA’s review of the safety and feasibility of SMR technology,” Jeon said. “We will make every effort to ensure that our technology and experience translate into meaningful outcomes.”
