Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) announced on April 10 that it hosted a five-day invitational training program for Asia-Pacific members of the International Union of Railways (UIC) in Seoul from April 6 to 10.
The program brought together around 20 representatives and officials from 10 UIC member countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including China, Japan, Australia, India, and Mongolia. Under the theme of “Sustainable Railways,” participants took part in lectures, discussions, and site visits.
During the training, railway experts from Korea and abroad—including Lucie Anderton, Head of Sustainability at UIC—delivered sessions on eco-friendly railway policies, carbon emissions trading systems in the rail sector, and strategies for community engagement.
Participants also shared their respective ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management strategies and best practices. Through group discussions, they explored future cooperation opportunities in the railway industry while strengthening professional networks.
As part of the program, attendees visited the Seoul Metropolitan Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot and Korail’s Human Resources Development Institute, where they observed Korea’s advanced maintenance technologies, safety management systems, and talent development frameworks.
Korail has been operating the UIC invitational training program since 2009. As of last year, it has trained 278 participants from 34 countries, playing a leading role in promoting railway cooperation and knowledge exchange across the Asia-Pacific region.
Cho Jin-hwan, Head of Korail’s International Business Division, stated, “Railways are a key pillar of global ESG strategies as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation. We will continue to strengthen global railway networks through cooperation with UIC members and enhance Korail’s international competitiveness.”
