Qualcomm Technologies unveiled two new flagship mobile platforms on September 23, expanding its premium Snapdragon lineup as smartphone makers prepare for a new generation of AI-powered devices.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are both built on a 2-nanometer process and designed to support increasingly sophisticated on-device AI, gaming, photography and connectivity.

The dual-platform launch reflects Qualcomm's effort to address a broader range of premium smartphones while positioning its chips for the emerging era of agentic AI, in which digital assistants can understand user context and carry out tasks across multiple applications.

From AI features to intelligent mobile assistants

Smartphone AI has largely developed around individual functions such as photo editing, translation and information retrieval. Agentic AI introduces a different approach, allowing software to understand user preferences, respond to changing circumstances and execute more complex sequences of tasks.

That shift places greater demands on mobile processors.

AI models must process information quickly while managing power consumption and handling sensitive data. On-device intelligence is therefore becoming an increasingly important part of smartphone design, complementing cloud-based AI services.

Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is designed to support AI agents that continuously adapt to users' daily routines, providing more immediate and personalized experiences.

Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, said the introduction of two flagship platforms marks an important milestone for the company.

"As the era of agentic AI takes shape, our multi-flagship strategy expands the possibilities of mobile technology while bringing the latest AI innovations to a broader range of premium devices," Patrick said.

AI moves deeper into gaming and photography

Beyond digital assistants, Qualcomm is extending AI capabilities into two of the most competitive areas of the premium smartphone market: gaming and imaging.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 introduces Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI-driven graphics processing to improve visual quality and gaming efficiency.

Qualcomm said the technology is designed to deliver richer graphics and more immersive gameplay while supporting longer gaming sessions.

The platform also introduces Advanced Professional Video (APV) support and Intelligent Pixel Control for camera applications.

These technologies are intended to improve how smartphones interpret scenes and process visual information, allowing manufacturers to enhance image and video quality through computational photography.

The developments reflect a broader shift in smartphone imaging, where AI processing has become an increasingly important complement to camera sensors and optical hardware.

Two flagship platforms built on 2nm technology

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 shares the same advanced 2nm manufacturing process as the Extreme model.

It features a custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a redesigned Adreno GPU and an advanced Hexagon NPU, bringing the company's latest AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity technologies to a wider range of premium devices.

Rather than relying on a single flagship processor, Qualcomm is offering smartphone manufacturers two platforms with different performance and product-positioning options.

The approach gives manufacturers greater flexibility when designing their highest-end models and other premium smartphones.

It also comes as competition in mobile semiconductors increasingly extends beyond conventional CPU and GPU benchmarks. AI processing, power efficiency, camera capabilities and the integration of hardware with software are becoming more prominent factors in device differentiation.

Smartphone competition enters the agentic AI phase

The launch comes at a time when smartphone manufacturers are seeking new ways to distinguish their devices through AI.

As AI assistants become more capable of handling tasks across applications, the underlying processor will play a greater role in determining how quickly and efficiently those functions operate.

For Qualcomm, the challenge is no longer limited to delivering faster mobile chips. Its platforms must also provide the computing foundation for increasingly personalized AI experiences while maintaining the battery life and performance expected of premium smartphones.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are expected to power upcoming flagship devices from major global smartphone manufacturers.

Qualcomm has not yet detailed the specific models or launch schedules for individual brands.
