LG Energy Solution said its Canadian manufacturing subsidiary NextStar Energy has produced its one millionth battery cell, just three months after beginning mass production.
NextStar announced on Feb. 12 (local time) that the milestone was achieved at its Windsor, Ontario facility. The company began full-scale operations in November last year. Industry observers attribute the rapid ramp-up and early yield stabilization to LG Energy Solution’s global production expertise.
The Windsor plant is currently focused on manufacturing pouch-type long cells based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry for energy storage systems (ESS). Equipped with advanced automation and streamlined production processes, the facility plans to more than double output this year compared to 2024 levels.
The plant represents Canada’s first large-scale battery manufacturing facility, with total investment reaching CAD 5 billion (approximately KRW 5.3 trillion). It employs more than 1,300 workers and has obtained major international certifications, including ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and IATF 16949 for automotive quality management.
Earlier, LG Energy Solution announced it would acquire the remaining stake in NextStar from its former joint venture partner, Stellantis, converting the company into a wholly owned subsidiary. The move is aimed at enabling more agile responses to changes in the North American market and strengthening its foothold in the rapidly growing ESS sector. The company said battery supply to Stellantis for electric vehicles will continue without disruption.
Brett Hylok, Chief Operating Officer of NextStar Energy, said the achievement reflects the execution capabilities and technical expertise of its workforce, adding that the company will continue to enhance production standards based on quality competitiveness.
