By Lim Byung-min (IBM), Columnist

Human civilization has always been shaped by work. Throughout history, people created tools to reduce physical labor, machines to multiply productivity, and industrial revolutions to transform economies. Today, humanity stands at another historic turning point with artificial intelligence. AI is no longer simply automating repetitive tasks; it is beginning to assist human reasoning, professional analysis, and even creative work.

This transformation is about far more than changing the way people work. It compels society to ask a more fundamental question: What should human beings live for when work is no longer the defining purpose of life?

As AI assumes a growing share of repetitive, hazardous, and routine work, people will no longer need to devote most of their lives merely to earning a living. Instead, human effort can increasingly focus on activities that machines cannot truly replace. This marks the beginning of what may be called the Healing Era—a shift in which society moves from labor to well-being, from relentless competition to coexistence, and from survival to quality of life.

Modern society faces an unprecedented mental health challenge. Chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout have become global concerns, demonstrating that economic prosperity alone does not guarantee human happiness. If AI reduces the burden of routine work, people will gain more time for family, rest, nature, reading, art, exercise, and reflection. Technological progress should ultimately make people healthier and happier—not simply more productive.

More importantly, the AI era elevates qualities that are uniquely human. AI can process enormous amounts of information and generate rapid answers, but it cannot genuinely experience compassion, love, sacrifice, friendship, artistic inspiration, or philosophical reflection. As automation expands, the value of creativity, education, counseling, culture, caregiving, and healing will increase accordingly. The future belongs not only to intelligent machines but also to more deeply human societies.

The Fifth Industry Begins with the Healing Economy

Every industrial revolution has primarily pursued greater productivity. The AI era, however, points toward a different destination. As productivity becomes increasingly automated, economic value will shift toward industries that improve human well-being rather than simply increasing material output.

Healthcare, wellness, mental health services, meditation, cultural experiences, nature-based therapies, sports, and companion-animal services are already expanding worldwide. At the same time, AI-powered health management, digital therapeutics, meditation platforms, sleep technologies, virtual reality wellness experiences, and digital art therapy are emerging as rapidly growing sectors within a broader healing economy.

As societies become wealthier, people naturally seek more than material consumption. They pursue healthier, longer, and more meaningful lives. Consequently, the more AI increases productivity, the greater society's investment will become in industries that enhance physical, emotional, and social well-being. This is the foundation of what the author describes as the Fifth Industry.

Yet productivity alone cannot create a sustainable society. Human beings find meaning through relationships, trust, compassion, and community. The future will therefore depend not only on technological innovation but also on our ability to strengthen the social fabric that technology alone cannot provide.

The role of humanity itself will also change. In the industrial age, success was measured largely by how much people could produce. In the AI era, the defining question will become how people choose to live. Humans will increasingly guide AI, establish ethical principles, create new ideas, connect communities, and design the future rather than merely perform repetitive work.

AI should never be viewed as a replacement for humanity. Its greatest value lies in enabling people to become more fully human.

The future envisioned by the AI era is not one in which human beings become less valuable, but one in which they are liberated from repetitive labor. The time and energy created by AI can then be invested in healing, creativity, meaningful relationships, and stronger communities.

This transformation also redefines the economy itself. Instead of measuring progress solely by the volume of goods produced, future economies will increasingly value industries that improve the quality of human life. The Fifth Industry is built on this transition—one where AI drives productivity while people create well-being. That is the true beginning of the Healing Economy.
