JB Financial Group is extending its growth strategy beyond South Korea, building a diversified financial network across Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar as it seeks new opportunities in Southeast Asia.

Rather than replicating the same business model across markets, the Korean financial group has taken a country-specific approach. Its regional portfolio now spans commercial banking, securities, asset management and microfinance, with digital finance increasingly becoming another link in the network.

JB Financial currently has four overseas second-tier subsidiaries: Cambodia's Phnom Penh Commercial Bank (PPCBank) and JB Phnom Penh Asset Management (JB PPAM), JB Capital Myanmar and JB Securities Vietnam (JBSV). Together with its five major domestic affiliates, they form the foundation of a financial portfolio that increasingly extends beyond Korea.

Cambodia became the foundation of JB Financial's regional expansion

Cambodia has played a central role in JB Financial's Southeast Asian strategy.

Jeonbuk Bank brought PPCBank into the group in 2016, establishing a direct presence in Cambodia's commercial banking market. Today, Jeonbuk Bank holds a 50% stake in PPCBank, while JB Woori Capital owns another 10%.

PPCBank has since developed into one of JB Financial's principal overseas platforms. According to the group's current global network, PPCBank operates 25 locations in Cambodia.

The group subsequently expanded beyond banking.

JB PPAM was established in Cambodia to provide asset management services, including collective investment products and real estate investment trusts. Jeonbuk Bank owns 60% of the company and JB Asset Management holds the remaining 40%.

The structure is significant because JB Financial's Cambodian presence is no longer centered on a single overseas bank. Banking and asset management now coexist in the same market, creating the foundation for a broader financial-services portfolio.

Vietnam adds securities and fintech to the strategy

Vietnam represents a different component of JB Financial's Southeast Asian expansion.

Kwangju Bank acquired a Vietnamese brokerage previously known as Morgan Stanley Gateway Securities and subsequently developed it as JB Securities Vietnam. JBSV is now wholly owned by Kwangju Bank and operates securities businesses including stock brokerage, corporate bond issuance management and investment services.

Vietnam's significance to JB Financial goes beyond conventional securities operations.

In 2024, the group signed a strategic investment agreement with Vietnamese investment platform Infina. JB Investment agreed to acquire approximately 3.9% of Infina, with plans allowing the stake to increase to around 5% depending on cooperation between Infina and JBSV.

The partnership was designed in part to broaden JBSV's customer base and develop new financial services by connecting an established securities operation with a local digital investment platform.

That gives JB Financial a different route into Vietnam's financial market: instead of relying solely on physical expansion, the group can combine an existing financial subsidiary with local technology platforms and their customer networks.

Vietnam itself is becoming increasingly important to international financial institutions. Foreign banks have been looking for a larger role in the country as economic growth and investment increase demand for financing, reinforcing the strategic importance of having an established local platform.

One region, multiple financial models

JB Financial's broader Southeast Asian portfolio shows a similar pattern of specialization.

Cambodia combines commercial banking through PPCBank with asset management through JB PPAM. Vietnam centers on securities through JBSV while adding a fintech connection through Infina.

In Myanmar, JB Capital Myanmar provides microfinance services for individuals, micro-entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses. The company was established as part of JB Financial's expansion into consumer and microfinance markets in the region.

The result is not a collection of identical overseas operations.

Instead, JB Financial has placed different financial businesses in different markets according to local opportunities — banking and asset management in Cambodia, securities and digital investment partnerships in Vietnam, and microfinance in Myanmar.

The group's official global network also includes representative operations by Jeonbuk Bank, Kwangju Bank and JB Woori Capital in Vietnam, further broadening its presence in the country.

Connecting Korean financial expertise with local platforms

Another notable feature of JB Financial's expansion is the growing role of its domestic subsidiaries.

Jeonbuk Bank provides the foundation for the Cambodian banking business. Kwangju Bank owns JBSV. JB Woori Capital participates in PPCBank and operates in the region, while JB Asset Management is connected to Cambodia through JB PPAM. JB Investment has added another dimension through its investment in Infina.

This structure allows JB Financial to draw on expertise already developed within the group rather than treating overseas operations as isolated investments.

The Infina partnership illustrates how that strategy can evolve further.

JB Financial does not necessarily need to build every distribution channel itself. By combining JBSV's financial capabilities with an established Vietnamese investment platform, the group can expand customer access while exploring new services with a local partner.

That approach also fits JB Financial's broader emphasis on efficient capital allocation: expanding through selective acquisitions, investments and partnerships while using existing group capabilities to generate additional opportunities.

From overseas footholds to a Southeast Asian financial network

JB Financial's overseas strategy is increasingly moving beyond establishing individual footholds.

In Cambodia, banking has expanded into asset management. In Vietnam, securities operations are being connected with fintech. Across the group, domestic banking, capital, asset management and investment subsidiaries are becoming increasingly linked to overseas businesses.

This creates the potential for a more integrated Southeast Asian financial network.

The significance is particularly clear when viewed against the maturity of South Korea's domestic banking market. Southeast Asia offers access to growing economies, expanding middle classes and financial markets that continue to deepen.

For JB Financial, those markets provide an opportunity to combine the stable earnings base developed in Korea with longer-term growth opportunities abroad.

The group already describes its ambition as becoming a stronger global financial group, supported by five domestic affiliates and four overseas second-tier subsidiaries.

What began with individual overseas operations has consequently developed into a broader portfolio spanning multiple countries and financial sectors.

With PPCBank and JB PPAM anchoring Cambodia, JBSV and its fintech partnerships expanding the group's reach in Vietnam, and JB Capital Myanmar adding microfinance capabilities, JB Financial is building a Southeast Asian growth platform that complements its domestic businesses.

As those operations become increasingly connected with the group's banking, capital, asset management and investment capabilities in Korea, Southeast Asia is emerging as an important new growth axis in JB Financial's long-term strategy.
