Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) has completed the delivery of railway maintenance equipment to Bangladesh as part of a technology cooperation project aimed at strengthening the country's railway operational capabilities, marking a key milestone in its official development assistance (ODA) program.
Korail announced on Wednesday that it held a handover ceremony at the Chattogram (Chittagong) Railway Locomotive Depot, where it officially delivered 18 types of diesel locomotive maintenance equipment to Bangladesh Railway.
The project forms the core of the "Locomotive Maintenance Technology Transfer Project," an ODA initiative supported by South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Since winning the project in 2023, Korail has spent nearly three years helping Bangladesh establish a systematic locomotive maintenance framework.
The handover ceremony was attended by around 30 officials from Korail, Bangladesh Railway, South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the International Contractors Association of Korea, and Bangladesh's Ministry of Railways.
The equipment delivered includes engine load testers, parts cleaning systems, axle bearing installation and removal devices, and other essential tools required for locomotive maintenance. Live demonstrations and acceptance procedures were conducted during the ceremony, allowing Bangladeshi maintenance personnel to familiarize themselves with the equipment and its practical applications.
Korail said the project goes beyond simply supplying equipment, as it is designed to enable Bangladesh Railway to independently maintain and service its locomotive fleet while establishing a sustainable maintenance system.
Earlier, Korail also held a project performance seminar in Dhaka to review the achievements made over the past three years. The company presented its work in organizational consulting for railway vehicle maintenance, workforce management, maintenance standards, and technical training programs for local railway engineers. Participants also discussed strategies to further improve Bangladesh's railway maintenance and operational systems.
Korail plans to continue providing on-site practical training and invite Bangladesh Railway employees to South Korea for advanced technical programs through the end of this year. The training is intended to improve equipment utilization and strengthen long-term maintenance capabilities.
Industry experts say railway technology transfer projects targeting developing countries are becoming an important gateway for expanding the global presence of South Korea's railway industry. By combining operational expertise, maintenance technology, and workforce training, Korean railway organizations are enhancing the competitiveness of "K-Railway" solutions in overseas markets.
Demand is expected to grow further as countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa continue investing in railway infrastructure while seeking comprehensive operational know-how and maintenance expertise alongside new rail systems.
