Mirae Asset Group is accelerating its expansion into digital finance after completing the regulatory review process for its acquisition of South Korea’s cryptocurrency exchange Korbit. The group plans to combine its global investment capabilities with digital asset infrastructure to create a new integrated investment ecosystem.

Mirae Asset said on July 9 that the Fair Trade Commission’s corporate merger review related to the Korbit acquisition has been completed, providing the institutional foundation needed to advance its digital asset business strategy.

The acquisition is expected to go beyond securing a cryptocurrency trading platform. Mirae Asset plans to connect its expertise in securities, asset management, and global investment with Korbit’s digital asset capabilities to create an investment platform that covers a wider range of asset classes.

Korbit is expected to become a key component of Mirae Asset’s long-term digital finance strategy. The group aims to provide an environment where investors can manage various assets across markets and asset categories through a single platform.

The move follows Mirae Asset’s launch of its global investment platform “MAPS (Mirae Asset Portfolio Service)” in Hong Kong in June, which marked a step toward integrating traditional financial products with digital assets. The Korbit acquisition is expected to further strengthen the group’s global platform strategy by adding domestic digital asset trading capabilities.

Industry observers expect the deal to accelerate changes in South Korea’s digital asset market. As major financial institutions enter the sector, competition is likely to expand beyond simple trading services toward institutional investment solutions, digital asset custody, research, and asset management services.

Mirae Asset plans to gradually expand into emerging digital finance areas, including stablecoins, custody services, real-world assets (RWA), and digital payments as regulatory frameworks continue to develop. The company also aims to support institutional investors through comprehensive services covering research, investment information, asset security, and portfolio management.

Strengthening investor protection will be another key priority. Mirae Asset plans to apply financial-sector-level internal controls and risk management systems to improve transaction security. The group will also enhance abnormal transaction monitoring, security surveillance, digital wallet management, and asset custody processes.

In addition, Mirae Asset plans to expand Korbit’s research capabilities and provide more investor education content to develop the platform beyond trading functions into an information-driven digital asset investment service.

Market analysts view the acquisition as a potential turning point for the domestic digital asset industry, as the involvement of a major financial group could help improve market transparency and investor confidence. The combination of traditional finance expertise and digital asset technology is expected to contribute to the broader institutionalization of the cryptocurrency market.

A Mirae Asset official said, “Digital assets are no longer limited to short-term investment products but are becoming a new asset class in the global financial industry. By combining Korbit’s digital asset infrastructure with Mirae Asset’s risk management, internal control, and investor protection capabilities, we aim to help establish a trusted digital asset ecosystem.”
