Samsung Electronics is reportedly in early-stage discussions with AI startup Anthropic on the potential production of custom artificial intelligence (AI) chips, according to a report by The Information.
The discussions are said to focus on Samsung's foundry business manufacturing AI chips designed by Anthropic, which has been expanding its efforts to develop proprietary hardware optimized for large language models and generative AI applications.
Anthropic, the developer of the AI assistant Claude, has been investing in custom semiconductor development as demand for AI computing infrastructure continues to surge. The company is seeking to reduce its reliance on off-the-shelf graphics processing units (GPUs) by designing chips tailored to its AI workloads.
For Samsung, a potential partnership with Anthropic would represent another opportunity to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI semiconductor market. The South Korean technology giant has been investing heavily in advanced chip manufacturing and AI memory solutions as it competes with other global foundries.
The reported talks remain at an early stage, and neither Samsung Electronics nor Anthropic has officially confirmed the discussions.
If realized, the collaboration could help Samsung expand its customer base for AI chip manufacturing while supporting Anthropic's long-term strategy to build a more efficient and cost-effective AI computing infrastructure amid intensifying competition in the generative AI industry.
