Hyundai Motor Group drew significant global media attention after unveiling the humanoid robot Atlas, developed by its robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics, at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.
Major international outlets highlighted the debut as evidence that Hyundai Motor Group is positioning itself beyond a traditional mobility company, moving toward a physical AI–driven robotics enterprise. Coverage focused on Atlas’ technical maturity, live demonstration, and potential real-world applications.
Associated Press reported that Boston Dynamics publicly demonstrated Atlas for the first time, noting that the robot stood up on its own, walked smoothly across the stage, waved to the audience, and turned its head with fluid motion. The report emphasized that public demonstrations of humanoid robots are rare due to the risk of errors, adding that Atlas performed without visible issues.
The UK-based newspaper The Guardian featured Atlas prominently in its CES robotics coverage, highlighting functions such as water resistance and automated battery replacement. The publication noted that the robot reflects years of testing and refinement moving toward a more polished product stage.
Euronews stated that the live demonstration showed Atlas is no longer a prototype, adding that Hyundai Motor Group aims to reduce physical labor demands through robotics and lay the groundwork for human-robot collaboration.
Automotive and technology publications also weighed in. Autoweek framed Hyundai Motor Group’s strategy around three pillars: promoting collaboration between humans and robots, integrating Boston Dynamics into its global manufacturing ecosystem, and partnering with leading AI companies. The article suggested the group views robotics, rather than electric vehicles or autonomous driving alone, as a core future technology.
TechRadar described Atlas as one of the most advanced humanoid robots in the world, while The Verge compared Atlas with Tesla’s Optimus, noting Hyundai Motor Group’s effort to demonstrate superior task performance.
Other outlets, including Mashable and Interesting Engineering, pointed out that Hyundai Motor Group emphasized robotics rather than vehicles at CES, and that the company is already deploying robots in real factory environments. Japan’s robotics-focused media Robotstart noted that Hyundai Motor Group’s approach could lead to leadership in both technology and business within the emerging robotics ecosystem.
During CES 2026, Atlas was also named ‘Best Robot’ in the ‘Best of CES 2026’ awards by CNET. CNET cited Atlas’ natural, human-like movement, refined design, and its potential to support human-centered AI robotics as key reasons for the selection.
