Samsung Electronics announced on March 31 that it will cancel treasury shares worth approximately ₩14.6 trillion as part of its ongoing shareholder return policy.
According to a regulatory filing, the company will retire 73.36 million common shares and 13.60 million preferred shares, with the cancellation scheduled for April 2. The total value of the shares to be retired amounts to about ₩14.58 trillion.
The shares being canceled were previously acquired following a board resolution in 2025. Samsung Electronics stated that the primary objective of the move is to enhance shareholder value. The cancellation will be carried out within the limits of distributable profits, meaning the total number of outstanding shares will decrease while the company’s capital will remain unchanged.
Earlier, Samsung Electronics had announced plans to retire approximately 87 million shares out of its 105.43 million treasury shares held as of the end of last year. The latest move is seen as part of that broader initiative, signaling the company’s commitment to consistent shareholder returns.
Market analysts expect the large-scale share cancellation to support an increase in earnings per share by reducing the total share count, while also improving investor confidence.
