Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group has completed Korea’s first off-grid green hydrogen production facility powered entirely by renewable energy, marking a step forward in its expansion into clean energy.
The company announced on March 25 that it has finalized construction of a green hydrogen plant in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, linked to a solar power system. An off-grid system operates independently from external power grids or gas supplies, generating and using energy on-site.
The completion ceremony was attended by key figures including Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment Kim Sung-hwan, National Assembly member Song Eon-seok, North Gyeongsang Province Vice Governor Yang Geum-hee, Gimcheon Mayor Bae Nak-ho, and Oh Se-cheol, President and CEO of Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group.
The facility uses electricity generated from an 8.3MW solar power system to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis. It is capable of producing approximately 0.6 tons of green hydrogen per day, or more than 230 tons annually. The hydrogen produced will be supplied to local hydrogen infrastructure, including fueling stations for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The project is significant as the first in Korea to adopt a fully off-grid model relying entirely on renewable energy, presenting a self-sustaining approach to hydrogen production.
Samsung C&T handled the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the entire system, including solar power generation and electrolysis facilities. The company also plans to participate in operations and maintenance (O&M) to ensure stable performance and further technological advancement.
Building on the experience gained from this project, Samsung C&T aims to expand into overseas green hydrogen markets and promote the localization of electrolysis equipment and operational technologies, which have been designated as national strategic technologies.
Jung Ki-seok, Head of the Renewable Energy Technology Research Center, said the project establishes a technological foundation for scaling up to larger green hydrogen initiatives and that the company will continue strengthening its competitiveness in the global green hydrogen market.
