Mirae Asset's TIGER U.S. Philadelphia Semiconductor Nasdaq ETF becomes Korea's first overseas thematic ETF to surpass KRW 6 trillion in assets
AI infrastructure and data center investments fuel strong investor demand
Diversified exposure across the global semiconductor value chain attracts long-term investors

Growing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and expanding global data center construction are boosting long-term expectations for the semiconductor industry, driving strong inflows into semiconductor-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs). As investors increasingly seek diversified exposure across the semiconductor value chain—from chip design and manufacturing to equipment and memory—Korea's leading U.S. semiconductor ETF continues to post rapid asset growth.

According to the financial industry on July 28, Mirae Asset Global Investments' TIGER U.S. Philadelphia Semiconductor Nasdaq ETF (381180) has become the first overseas thematic ETF listed in Korea to exceed KRW 6 trillion (approximately US$4.4 billion) in assets under management.

Data from the Korea Exchange (KRX) showed that the ETF's net assets reached KRW 6.06 trillion as of July 27, making it the largest overseas thematic ETF listed on the Korean market. Industry analysts attribute the strong inflows to the rapid expansion of AI technologies across industries and continued large-scale investments in AI data centers by global technology companies, reinforcing semiconductors as a long-term structural growth theme rather than a short-term investment trend.

Retail investors have also played a significant role in the ETF's growth. More than half of all net retail inflows into Korea-listed U.S. semiconductor ETFs this year have been directed toward the fund, with cumulative net purchases by individual investors reaching KRW 403 billion since the beginning of the year.

One of the ETF's key attractions is its broad exposure across the global semiconductor ecosystem rather than concentrating on a single segment of the industry. The fund tracks the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), which includes companies spanning semiconductor design, manufacturing, foundries, equipment, and memory.

Its holdings include AI chip designers such as Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD; foundry leader TSMC; semiconductor equipment manufacturers including ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, and KLA; as well as memory producer Micron Technology. This diversified portfolio enables investors to participate in the growth of the overall semiconductor industry while reducing dependence on the performance of individual companies or subsectors.

Strong investment performance has further strengthened investor interest. As of July 27, the ETF had returned 67.6% year-to-date, outperforming both the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq-100 over the same period. Rising demand for high-performance semiconductors required for AI data centers, coupled with improving industry fundamentals, has contributed to gains across semiconductor stocks and, consequently, the ETF's overall performance.

Market observers believe demand for semiconductor ETFs could remain strong if AI infrastructure investment continues to accelerate. The expansion of AI models and data centers is expected to increase demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, creating growth opportunities throughout the industry's value chain.

As a result, investors are increasingly viewing diversified semiconductor ETFs as an efficient way to participate in the long-term expansion of the global semiconductor market without having to select individual stocks.

However, analysts caution that the semiconductor industry remains cyclical and subject to significant volatility. Factors such as economic conditions, supply chain disruptions, corporate earnings, and technological competition could lead to fluctuations in semiconductor stock prices. Elevated valuations and a potential slowdown in the global economy may also trigger short-term market corrections despite favorable long-term AI growth prospects.

"Expansion of AI infrastructure is creating growth opportunities across the entire semiconductor industry, including chip design, equipment, foundries, and memory," said Kim Sang-yul, Head of Global ETF Management at Mirae Asset Global Investments. "The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index provides diversified exposure to a wide range of global semiconductor companies, making it an attractive long-term investment alternative rather than concentrating on a single area of the industry."
