Automated analysis of AWS configurations against ISMS-P controls shows why cloud security will be judged by remediation speed, not detection alone

By reducing the initial assessment process from more than a month to approximately 30 minutes, it supports the transition from periodic compliance reviews to repeatable cloud security management. /Graphic by Korea IT Times

The time required for an initial cloud security assessment is being compressed from a month to minutes. Saltware, a South Korean AI and cloud specialist, said on August 26 that it had deployed its AI-powered Security Compliance Review (SCR) service for Backpackr, operator of the handmade commerce platform idus. The significance extends beyond faster reporting. A process traditionally commissioned from external specialists is becoming an operational capability that companies can run repeatedly when needed.

SCR is built on AWS Config, which records the configurations and change histories of Amazon Web Services (AWS) resources. The service analyses cloud settings against 103 core controls under Korea’s Information Security Management System–Personal Information Management System (ISMS-P). It covers areas including user permissions, access controls, data encryption, incident response and disaster recovery, presenting the results in a visual HTML report with standard operating guidance for higher-risk findings.

Backpackr faced the challenge of managing its expanding AWS infrastructure while strengthening security reviews and the collection of evidence required for ISMS-P compliance. SCR has given the company a common framework for examining settings distributed across multiple services and prioritising remediation according to risk. The confirmed outcome at this stage, however, is the establishment of a faster diagnostic and management framework. The case does not yet demonstrate a measurable reduction in vulnerabilities, shorter remediation times or fewer security incidents.

Security consulting becomes repeatable software

Traditional security reviews are usually conducted as projects. A company and its consultants agree on the scope, collect relevant materials and analyse the environment before producing a report. The process can take a month or longer, prompting organisations with limited security staff and budgets to concentrate their efforts around certification reviews or scheduled audits.

SCR can produce an initial assessment in approximately 30 minutes once the customer grants the necessary access to its AWS account. Reviews previously conducted monthly, quarterly or annually can therefore be repeated whenever operational needs arise. The wider implication is that part of cloud compliance is being converted from a periodic consulting assignment into a software-enabled process.

This does not eliminate the role of security professionals. Software can collect configuration data and compare it with predefined controls, but people must still determine the actual severity of each finding, change settings without disrupting services and decide whether an exception is justified. As machines reduce the time spent gathering evidence and preparing reports, specialists can concentrate on prioritising risk, improving system architecture and designing incident-response procedures.

The limits of automated assessment must also be clear. Checking 103 AWS configuration controls is not equivalent to satisfying every requirement for ISMS-P certification. Corporate security policies, accountability structures, employee management, personal data procedures and physical security cannot be fully evaluated from cloud configuration data alone. The claim that a month-long review can be completed in 30 minutes therefore applies to the collection and initial analysis of AWS configuration information—not to an entire certification audit or the remediation of identified vulnerabilities.

Faster detection exposes the remediation bottleneck

Once diagnosis becomes faster, the next constraint becomes more visible. A company may identify a vulnerable setting within minutes, but the risk remains if it lacks the responsible personnel, budget or authority to correct it. Assessment time and the number of findings are therefore insufficient measures of an automated security service. Remediation rates for high-risk issues, average resolution time, recurrence and residual risk provide a more meaningful test.

Saltware plans to develop SCR from a one-off assessment service into a continuous security management platform. Its roadmap includes a dashboard displaying a real-time security score, scheduled automated scans, comparisons with previous assessments and automated collection of evidence for ISMS-P reviews. If implemented, these functions would broaden SCR’s role from producing a static report to tracking changes in an organisation’s security posture over time. Its value would ultimately be demonstrated by how quickly and consistently customers reduce the risks it identifies.

Distribution through AWS Marketplace is also noteworthy. Small and midsized companies that lack large dedicated security teams can purchase an assessment service without undertaking a lengthy standalone implementation project. This may lower the cost and organisational threshold for cloud security reviews, but acquiring the software does not in itself create a secure operating model. Companies remain responsible for identifying all cloud assets within scope, reviewing the findings and assigning clear ownership for remediation.

The Saltware–Backpackr case is not simply a story about AI solving cloud security. As automation reduces the cost and time required to understand security conditions, corporate responsibility becomes more explicit: the decisive question is no longer merely whether a risk was detected, but who corrected it and how quickly. As cloud compliance becomes embedded in routine operations, the value of AI security will be measured not by how rapidly it produces a report, but by how effectively it shortens the interval between discovery and remediation.
