LG Uplus has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LG Electronics to jointly develop AI-driven communication technologies and strengthen collaboration on international standardization for the 6G era.
Announced on April 2, the agreement focuses on advancing next-generation technologies such as semantic communication and post-quantum cryptography (PQC), both of which are expected to play a central role in future telecom networks.
The two companies aim to move beyond the timeline of 6G commercialization by proactively identifying key architectural elements of future communication systems and participating in global standardization efforts. Industry expectations suggest that 6G will shift beyond speed competition toward maximizing network efficiency through AI while significantly enhancing security frameworks.
Semantic communication, a technology that uses AI to transmit information based on meaning and context rather than raw data, is emerging as a key enabler of ultra-low latency and high-efficiency communications required for 6G. Meanwhile, PQC is gaining attention as a next-generation security solution designed to withstand potential threats posed by quantum computing, which could compromise conventional encryption systems.
Under the partnership, LG Uplus will evaluate real-world applications of semantic communication within network environments and identify relevant security requirements and standardization issues. LG Electronics will focus on researching the architecture and algorithms behind semantic communication, as well as developing core technologies applicable to devices and platforms.
In the field of PQC, both companies plan to jointly analyze technology trends and contribute to the development of standard specifications, while preparing strategies for integrating these technologies into devices and network systems.
The collaboration reflects LG Group’s broader effort to extend its technological leadership across both telecommunications and devices into the emerging 6G landscape. The companies also plan to hold annual technical exchange meetings to further advance joint research and development.
Lee Sang-yup, Chief Technology Officer of LG Uplus, said that the convergence of AI and communications will be a defining factor in technological competitiveness in the 6G era, adding that the partnership with LG Electronics will strengthen capabilities in both future technology development and global standardization efforts.
