Genesis BBQ is accelerating its global expansion by entering Thailand, a key market in Southeast Asia, as it seeks to strengthen its international food service business. The company aims to establish a solid foothold by building a franchise-based operation in partnership with a local firm.

According to industry sources on March 23, BBQ has signed a master franchise (MF) agreement with a Thai partner, marking its official entry into the market. Under the agreement, the local partner will oversee operations, while BBQ will provide brand management, menu development, and operational systems.

Thailand is widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic dining markets, with a population of around 70 million and a thriving tourism industry. The country’s food culture—characterized by a strong preference for spicy flavors, fried dishes, and rich sauces—is seen as highly compatible with Korean-style fried chicken and casual Korean food offerings. Growing interest in K-food is also expected to support market entry.

BBQ plans to expand its presence by securing key locations in major urban centers, starting with Bangkok. The company is also targeting high-traffic areas such as Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, where tourism demand is strong. Flagship stores in the form of casual dining restaurants (CDR) will play a central role in building brand awareness.

The company is also adopting a localized menu strategy. In addition to its signature fried chicken, BBQ intends to broaden its K-food lineup with items such as tteokbokki and cheese balls to appeal to a wider consumer base.

Thailand is expected to serve as a strategic hub for BBQ’s broader Southeast Asia expansion. After establishing a stable business foundation in the country, the company plans to expand into neighboring markets including Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, pursuing a regional growth strategy.

Industry observers note that as competition among global food service brands intensifies, success in new markets will depend on a combination of strong local partnerships and the continued global appeal of Korean food. BBQ’s entry into Thailand reflects this approach, positioning the company to capitalize on both trends.
