LG Energy Solution has begun supplying batteries for a large-scale energy storage system (ESS) project in Europe, signaling a faster push into the region’s growing energy storage market.
The company said it has shipped the first batch of batteries for the Żarnowiec ESS project, which is being developed in partnership with Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE). Initial deliveries began in mid-April, with some equipment already installed on site.
The project adopts a DC-linked system based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. A total of 204 containerized ESS units, each weighing around 45 tons, will be deployed in phases, with an average of four units installed per day.
With a power output of 262 megawatts (MW) and storage capacity of 981 megawatt-hours (MWh), the Żarnowiec project is considered one of the largest ESS developments in Europe. Full delivery is expected to be completed between late June and late July.
The ESS units integrate battery modules, cooling systems, and fire prevention features into a single design, meeting international standards such as IEC and CE certifications.
A key feature of the project is its localized production model. From battery manufacturing to system assembly, the entire process is carried out in Poland, strengthening supply chain efficiency and responsiveness to regional demand.
LG Energy Solution has been expanding its European value chain centered around its Wrocław facility, where it produces electrodes, cells, modules, and ESS containers. This integrated production capability is seen as a competitive advantage in securing large-scale projects.
Industry analysts expect the latest supply milestone to further validate the company’s ability to execute large ESS projects, while also positioning it to capture additional opportunities as renewable energy deployment accelerates across Europe.
The company aims to expand its ESS production capacity to around 60 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by the end of this year and increase new project orders compared to last year.
