Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step toward reclaiming leadership in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market by delivering samples of its next-generation HBM4E 12-high product to global customers for the first time.

The company said on May 29 that it has begun supplying HBM4E 12-layer samples, marking a major milestone roughly three months after initiating mass production shipments of HBM4. Industry observers view the move as Samsung’s renewed push to regain technological momentum in the rapidly expanding AI memory market, where it has recently trailed key rivals.

HBM4E is expected to be a critical memory solution for next-generation artificial intelligence accelerators, including future GPUs from leading AI chip designers such as Nvidia. As demand for large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and AI inference workloads continues to surge, the need for ultra-high bandwidth memory solutions is accelerating sharply.

<>Higher speed, bandwidth, and capacity targets for AI workloads

According to Samsung Electronics, the HBM4E product delivers substantial performance improvements over previous generations. The device achieves data transfer speeds of up to 16 Gbps per pin, approximately 20% higher than HBM4. In a single-stack configuration, bandwidth reaches up to 3.6 TB per second, positioning the product for next-generation AI training and inference systems that require massive parallel data processing.

Capacity has also been significantly expanded. The newly sampled 12-high configuration supports 48 GB per stack, while future variants are expected to include 8-high 32 GB and 16-high 64 GB options. These configurations are designed to meet the growing memory demands of AI data centers and hyperscale cloud providers.

Samsung also emphasized improvements in power efficiency and thermal performance. Through optimized circuit design and advanced packaging technologies, the company reduced power consumption by around 16% compared to the previous generation, while improving thermal resistance by more than 14%. These enhancements are increasingly important as energy costs become a critical constraint in AI infrastructure deployment.

<>Foundry-memory integration strengthens “turnkey” strategy

A key feature of HBM4E is the integration of Samsung’s semiconductor capabilities across multiple divisions, including memory, foundry, system LSI, and advanced packaging. The company said the product combines its 1c DRAM process node with a proprietary 4nm logic die, improving both performance and manufacturing yield.

Industry analysts note that Samsung’s ability to provide an end-to-end semiconductor solution could become a strategic advantage as AI chipmakers seek more tightly integrated supply chains. The company’s “one-stop turnkey” approach may strengthen its position in securing long-term partnerships with major AI hardware customers.

The global HBM market is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years, driven by escalating demand from AI infrastructure providers. With leading tech companies racing to develop next-generation AI chips, access to high-performance HBM has become a key bottleneck and a critical competitive factor in the semiconductor industry.

Samsung plans to further expand its AI memory roadmap following the HBM4E sample shipment, with the goal of aligning mass production with customer timelines and increasing its presence in next-generation AI systems.

“Following the successful mass production of HBM4 and now the stable delivery of HBM4E samples, we have once again demonstrated our technological competitiveness,” said Hwang Sang-joon, Vice President and Head of DRAM Development at Samsung Electronics. “We will lead the growth of the global AI memory market through proactive investment and technological leadership.”

Industry watchers say Samsung’s latest move could signal a potential shift in the HBM competitive landscape, currently led by SK hynix. However, they also note that future success will depend on customer adoption rates and the company’s ability to maintain stable large-scale production yields.
