Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) hosted a joint workshop on digital transformation (DX) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with Canada’s energy authorities and nuclear operators on April 6 at its Central Research Institute in Daejeon.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including KHNP, Canada’s Department of Energy, Conexus—an organization supporting the CANDU reactor technology ecosystem—as well as major Canadian nuclear operators such as Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, and New Brunswick Power.
During the workshop, KHNP introduced a range of next-generation technologies aimed at enhancing nuclear plant safety and operational efficiency. These included digital transformation technologies applied to the APR1400 reactor, AI-based equipment condition monitoring and operational support systems, as well as the use of digital twins and safety robots for hazardous work environments.
Participants exchanged insights on the adoption of advanced technologies in nuclear operations and explored opportunities for future collaboration.
Shin Ho-cheol, head of KHNP’s Central Research Institute, said the workshop served as a meaningful platform to share innovation cases in future nuclear plant operations leveraging DX and AI technologies. He added that KHNP aims to strengthen its cooperative network with Canadian power operators and expand collaboration through joint research and other initiatives.
