LS Cable & System has secured a turnkey contract worth approximately KRW 60 billion to build a subsea power grid for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s state-owned power utility, the company announced on January 27.
The project involves expanding a 132-kilovolt subsea power transmission network connecting Peninsular Malaysia with Langkawi Island, one of the country’s major tourist destinations. The aim is to strengthen the stability and reliability of power supply to the island.
Under the contract, LS Cable & System will deliver the entire project scope on a turnkey basis, covering system design, procurement, cable manufacturing, subsea cable laying, and construction. The company said the project highlights its ability to execute complex subsea power projects from end to end.
LS Cable & System won the contract amid competition from multiple global players. The award follows the company’s successful completion of the first Langkawi subsea power project, marking a consecutive win for the second phase and underscoring its engineering capabilities and execution track record.
Industry sources noted that the client’s confidence, built through the earlier project, along with LS Cable & System’s technical expertise and overall competitiveness, played a key role in securing the latest contract.
Subsea power grid investment has been increasing across Southeast Asia as countries pursue the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which aims to interconnect national power networks across the region.
The global subsea cable market is expected to grow to around KRW 34 trillion by 2030, according to industry estimates, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for roughly KRW 20 trillion of that total, driven largely by the region’s large number of islands.
LS Cable & System said it plans to further expand its overseas business while accelerating efforts in the domestic market. In Korea, the company intends to strengthen its competitiveness in large-scale national projects, including the West Coast Energy Highway, which is expected to enter the bidding phase in the first half of the year, through collaboration with LS Marine Solution.
An LS Cable & System official said the company continues to build trust in global markets based on its accumulated project experience and technical expertise, adding that it aims to further strengthen its leadership in the subsea cable sector by successfully delivering key power grid projects at home and abroad.
