Genesis BBQ Group announced on March 30 that it has completed the construction of solar-powered water supply facilities in Kenya through its social contribution program “I Love Africa,” involving both headquarters and franchise partners.

Since 2018, BBQ has raised funds to support initiatives aimed at improving living conditions in vulnerable regions across Africa, including access to clean water, food, and healthcare. In 2025, the company successfully supplied stable drinking water to approximately 13,475 residents in Kenya through a solar-powered water development project.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with I Love Africa, Korea’s first NGO specializing in African development and humanitarian aid. BBQ financed the project through a matching fund system, in which both headquarters and franchisees contribute 10 won each for every chicken sold.

The solar-powered water systems were installed at 17 key locations across Machakos County, including markets, schools, and healthcare centers. These facilities enable local communities to access groundwater more reliably and sustainably.

Machakos County has long faced severe water shortages due to its arid climate and irregular rainfall patterns. Combined with population growth, the lack of stable water resources has negatively impacted education and healthcare conditions in the region.

To address these challenges, BBQ implemented a solar-powered pumping and distribution system that draws groundwater for community use. The company expects the project to reduce the burden on women who previously had to travel long distances to collect water, while also improving overall living conditions and supporting local economic activity.

The company noted that the project is contributing to the prevention of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. It is also expected to support healthier development for children and improve the quality of life for women in the region.

A BBQ official stated that the company will continue to expand its positive social impact through sustained corporate social responsibility initiatives both in Korea and overseas.
