POSCO Holdings has secured a major financing lifeline for its lithium business in Argentina, strengthening the financial foundation of its local operations as it moves to expand production and improve profitability.

POSCO Argentina, the lithium-producing subsidiary of POSCO Holdings, received approval on Aug. 4 for a $700 million short-term credit facility from IDB Invest, the private-sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group).

The credit line, equivalent to roughly 1 trillion won, is expected to provide POSCO Argentina with greater flexibility in managing working capital for its first and second brine lithium plants.

The financing comes at a critical point for the company as its second lithium plant is scheduled for completion in the second half of this year. The additional financial flexibility is expected to help support the ramp-up of production and cover operating expenses as capacity expands.

The deal is also significant because it demonstrates international financial institutions’ confidence in the competitiveness and growth potential of POSCO’s lithium business in Argentina.

The IDB Group has been expanding financial support for resource-development projects that can strengthen critical mineral supply chains across Latin America. POSCO’s ability to secure a sizable credit facility from the institution underscores the strategic importance of its Argentine lithium operations amid intensifying global competition for battery materials.

The financing could also help reduce the company’s financial burden. Tax incentives provided under the IDB’s founding agreement can lower the tax costs associated with interest payments and financial transactions, potentially allowing POSCO Argentina to secure working capital on relatively favorable terms.

That could improve both the profitability and cost competitiveness of the lithium business as the company moves toward higher production volumes.

POSCO Argentina has also shown signs of improving operating performance. The company recorded its first quarterly profit in the second quarter of this year, marking a turnaround as its production base continues to expand.

The combination of improving profitability, expanding production capacity and stronger access to international financing could accelerate the growth of POSCO’s lithium business in Argentina.

The company has also gained additional institutional support through Argentina’s Large Investment Incentive Regime, known as RIGI. POSCO Holdings views the approval, along with government-level cooperation between South Korea and Argentina and support from the Argentine government, as strengthening the overall foundation for its local operations.

The latest financing highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in securing critical mineral supply chains. As demand for lithium continues to rise alongside the electric vehicle and battery industries, strengthening production bases in resource-rich regions such as South America has become an increasingly important strategic priority for battery material companies.

For POSCO Group, Argentina is a key part of its broader strategy to build a stable supply chain for lithium and other strategic resources.

POSCO Holdings plans to strengthen what it calls its “Triple Core” growth strategy, centered on industrial resources such as steel, strategic resources including lithium, cathode and anode materials, rare earths and rare gases, and energy resources such as LNG and renewable energy.

Within that strategy, the Argentine lithium business is expected to take on an increasingly important role as the company combines production expansion, improving profitability and international financing to strengthen its global resource portfolio.

Industry observers say the $700 million credit facility is particularly significant because it provides POSCO with a financial foundation to move its Argentine lithium operations beyond the investment phase and toward stable production and earnings generation.

With the second plant expected to come online later this year, POSCO’s ability to scale up production while maintaining financial stability could become a key factor in strengthening its position in the increasingly competitive global lithium market.
