LG Uplus has partnered with Broadcom to demonstrate an AI-powered home networking technology that can analyze and manage internet quality directly from a household Wi-Fi router.
The Korean telecom operator said it successfully tested a self-healing home network based on a Wi-Fi 8 platform, with artificial intelligence running locally on the router rather than on a cloud server.
The technology is designed to detect early signs of network degradation before users notice a decline in service quality and automatically take corrective action.
The move comes as demand grows for fast and reliable home networks to support bandwidth-intensive services such as generative AI, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming and ultra-high-definition IPTV.
For the demonstration, LG Uplus worked with Broadcom to build an edge AI-based home networking environment capable of running AI models directly on a router. Broadcom provided a Wi-Fi 8 platform equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) designed to support AI workloads, while LG Uplus optimized and lightweighted its existing cloud-based network quality prediction model for operation on the router.
During the demonstration, the AI analyzed network quality data in real time and detected potential signs of service degradation in advance. When a decline in network performance was anticipated, the system automatically optimized network settings and initiated recovery procedures to maintain stable connectivity.
The demonstration highlights the potential for Wi-Fi routers to evolve beyond basic connectivity devices into intelligent platforms capable of monitoring, analyzing and managing network performance autonomously.
LG Uplus plans to continue testing and enhancing AI-based network management technologies as it prepares for the broader adoption of Wi-Fi 8.
“By running an AI model directly on Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 8 platform, we demonstrated the potential for home routers to evolve into intelligent network quality management platforms,” said Nam Seung-nam, executive vice president and head of wireless broadband sales at Broadcom Korea. “We will continue to expand our partnership with LG Uplus to support innovation in next-generation home networks.”
“This demonstration is significant because it confirms the potential of edge AI technology running directly inside network equipment,” said Lee Jin-hyuk, senior vice president of LG Uplus’ Consumer Service Development Lab. “We will continue working with global technology partners to advance intelligent home networks in which AI can independently manage the quality of services experienced by customers.”
