Consumer hardware startup Aina has raised $5.5 million in seed funding to develop a general-purpose hardware interface designed for AI-driven computing, as the industry explores alternatives to conventional keyboards and touchscreens.

Apoorv Shankar

Founded by former Ultrahuman executive Apoorv Shankar, the San Francisco- and Bangalore-based company said the funding will support the commercialization of its flagship interface and expansion of its engineering operations.

The round was co-led by Redstart Labs (Info Edge India) and 360 ONE Asset, with participation from MIXI Global Investments, Antler, Blume Founders Fund and several angel investors.

Bridging the Gap Between AI Software and User Interfaces

Rapid advances in generative AI and autonomous software agents have accelerated discussions about whether existing hardware interfaces remain suitable for increasingly AI-driven workflows.

While AI applications have become capable of automating complex tasks, many interactions still rely on traditional input methods such as keyboards, touchscreens and multiple application windows. Aina argues that this disconnect between software capabilities and hardware interaction presents an opportunity for new interface designs.

The company is developing a context-aware interface intended to simplify common digital tasks by reducing manual navigation and repetitive user input.

From Experimental Devices to a General-Purpose Platform

Aina was incorporated in May 2025 after operating as a human-computer interaction (HCI) research lab under the name Project Mirage.

The company introduced several experimental AI interface concepts at CES 2026, focusing on applications such as online meetings, ride-hailing and food ordering.

Earlier this year, it also released Dune, a three-key programmable keypad for Mac computers that dynamically changes its functions according to the active application. According to the company, the device has been distributed to early users to collect feedback on AI-assisted workflows.

Building on those experiments, Aina is now developing a broader interface platform intended to support a wider range of AI-enabled computing tasks.

Funding to Support Product Launch

The newly secured capital will be used to bring the company's flagship interface to market and expand its teams in San Francisco and Bangalore.

Aina has also opened a pilot waitlist for early users as development of the hardware platform continues.

Why It Matters

As AI assistants evolve from software tools into systems capable of executing tasks autonomously, attention is increasingly shifting from AI models alone to the hardware through which people interact with them.

Technology companies and investors are exploring whether a new generation of AI-native interfaces could emerge alongside advances in intelligent agents. Aina's latest funding reflects growing investor interest in that possibility, although widespread adoption of alternative hardware interfaces remains to be demonstrated.
