Sunscreen has become a daily essential, especially during the summer. But while most routines focus on the face and skin, one area has largely remained overlooked: the scalp.

Kolmar Korea is now stepping into that gap, developing a scalp-specific sunscreen and, in the process, testing the potential of an emerging segment within the broader K-beauty market.

The company recently introduced a product designed for direct application to the scalp, offering SPF 50+ protection. Unlike conventional sunscreens, the formulation is closer to a lightweight essence. In use, it absorbs quickly without leaving a sticky residue or causing hair to clump—one of the key challenges that has historically limited sunscreen use on the scalp.

That usability factor may prove to be critical. Traditional UV protection products often contain oil-based ingredients that can weigh down hair or create an uncomfortable texture, making them impractical for everyday scalp use. Kolmar Korea appears to have addressed this by balancing water-based and oil-based components, resulting in a formula that feels closer to a hydrating treatment than a typical sunscreen.

The move reflects a broader shift in how consumers think about sun protection. While the scalp is one of the most exposed areas of the body, it has rarely been treated as a separate category for UV care. Yet prolonged sun exposure can lead to irritation and heat buildup, particularly in high-temperature environments.

With global temperatures rising and outdoor activity increasing, demand is gradually shifting toward more comprehensive sun care solutions. Products that combine cooling effects with UV protection are gaining attention, and scalp care is beginning to enter that conversation.

Kolmar Korea is not limiting its efforts to a single product. The company is preparing additional formats such as mists and sprays, which could offer more convenient ways to apply protection throughout the day. It is also working on a dedicated cleanser designed to remove sunscreen residue from the scalp, suggesting a move toward building a complete care routine rather than a standalone product.

Industry observers see this as part of a broader evolution within K-beauty. As the category matures globally, innovation is increasingly focused on expanding use cases and refining consumer experience rather than simply introducing new ingredients.

Whether scalp sun care becomes a mainstream habit remains to be seen. Adoption will likely depend on how quickly awareness spreads and whether products can deliver a comfortable, seamless experience in everyday use.
