LG Energy Solution has reached a patent licensing agreement with Chinese battery manufacturer Sunwoda, bringing an end to a series of legal disputes that had been ongoing across multiple countries for more than two years.

The agreement, announced jointly by Tulip Innovation, the patent licensing entity representing LG Energy Solution and Panasonic Energy, and Sunwoda, resolves all outstanding issues related to battery technologies owned by LG Energy Solution and Panasonic Energy. As part of the settlement, all ongoing legal proceedings in Germany, China and South Korea will be withdrawn.

While the financial terms and specific conditions of the agreement were not disclosed, industry observers view the deal as a significant outcome for LG Energy Solution, which has consistently emphasized the protection of its battery intellectual property portfolio.

The dispute centered on several battery technologies that LG Energy Solution claimed were used without proper licensing. In previous rulings, German courts sided with LG Energy Solution in multiple patent infringement cases, ordering sales bans, product recalls and compensation measures involving batteries found to violate the company's patents.

The settlement also removes legal uncertainty surrounding vehicles equipped with Sunwoda batteries that had become subject to regulatory and legal actions in South Korea.

Industry analysts say the agreement highlights the growing importance of intellectual property rights as competition intensifies in the global electric vehicle battery market. As battery technologies become increasingly sophisticated, patent ownership and licensing arrangements are emerging as key competitive factors alongside manufacturing capacity and supply chain strength.

LG Energy Solution currently holds one of the world's largest battery patent portfolios. As of the end of March, the company owned more than 56,000 registered patents and nearly 98,000 patent applications worldwide, covering a broad range of battery materials, cell design, manufacturing processes and next-generation energy storage technologies.

The resolution of the dispute is also expected to strengthen LG Energy Solution's position in future licensing negotiations with battery manufacturers and technology companies seeking access to advanced battery technologies.

Market experts believe the case could encourage broader adoption of licensing agreements within the battery industry, helping establish clearer intellectual property standards as the global transition toward electric mobility accelerates.

"This agreement demonstrates that innovation and long-term investment in technology deserve appropriate recognition and compensation," LG Energy Solution said in a statement. "As an original innovator in the battery industry, we will continue supporting a fair and healthy competitive environment while advancing technological development across the global battery ecosystem."

The company added that it intends to continue expanding patent licensing discussions globally while taking firm action against unauthorized use of its proprietary technologies.
