LG Chem is expanding its presence in the growth hormone market with a renewed focus on patient experience, introducing an upgraded injection system designed to simplify long-term self-administration.

The company announced the launch of a new product set combining a reusable pen device, Utrion EcoPen 48, and a dedicated growth hormone cartridge, Utrion Cartridge 48IU. The release marks the first cartridge-replacement type system under the Utrion brand, signaling a shift from device-integrated models toward more flexible, user-oriented drug delivery solutions.

Unlike earlier all-in-one devices, the new pen allows users to attach and replace cartridges, enabling repeated use of the injection device itself. This approach reflects a broader trend in pharmaceutical delivery systems, where convenience and sustainability are becoming increasingly important factors alongside clinical efficacy.

A key focus of the new system is reducing both the psychological and physical burden associated with repeated injections, particularly for pediatric patients. LG Chem developed the device in collaboration with Switzerland-based Ypsomed, a global specialist in drug delivery technologies, with an emphasis on usability in real-world treatment settings.

The injection mechanism itself has been redesigned. Instead of relying on manual force, the pen uses a spring-driven, semi-automatic system, allowing for smoother and more consistent drug delivery. The injection button travel is fixed at 3 millimeters regardless of dosage, helping maintain uniform pressure and reducing variability during use.

The device also incorporates a high-capacity 48IU cartridge—the largest available among growth hormone products in Korea—which reduces the frequency of cartridge replacement. This is expected to make daily treatment routines more manageable, particularly for children and caregivers.

Durability and safety features have also been enhanced. The pen body is made of metal rather than plastic to support repeated use, and a “last-dose lock” function prevents users from setting a dosage higher than the remaining amount in the cartridge. Additional feedback mechanisms, including audible signals during injection and real-time dose tracking, are designed to help users better understand and monitor the treatment process.

Industry observers note that while growth hormone therapies have long been established, innovation is increasingly shifting toward delivery devices that improve adherence and comfort. As treatments often require long-term, daily administration, usability can play a decisive role in overall patient outcomes.

LG Chem said it has been building long-term clinical data through large-scale observational studies involving pediatric patients in Korea since 2012. The company aims to use these insights to refine treatment approaches while continuing to develop more accessible and user-friendly injection environments.

The latest launch reflects a broader move by pharmaceutical companies to combine drug development with device innovation, recognizing that patient experience is becoming a critical dimension of healthcare delivery.
