Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) is expanding its role in the global railway market by helping Korean rail suppliers access overseas procurement opportunities through the Manila Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) project in the Philippines.

Korail announced that it held a procurement and supply chain briefing for the MRT-7 operation and maintenance (O&M) project at Gwangmyeong Station on Wednesday. The event brought together executives from San Miguel Corporation, the project developer, and representatives from more than 30 Korean companies specializing in rolling stock, electrical systems, signaling, and power infrastructure.

Korail has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of MRT-7 since July 2025. The railway line, currently being developed by San Miguel Corporation, is one of the Philippines' major urban transit projects and is expected to improve mobility across Metro Manila upon full operation.

During the briefing, Korail introduced the project's procurement strategy, maintenance supply plans, and procedures for participating as approved suppliers. San Miguel officials also explained the company's vendor registration process and procurement requirements, providing Korean manufacturers with practical guidance on entering the Philippine railway market.

A series of one-on-one business meetings allowed participating companies to showcase their technologies and product portfolios while discussing potential supply opportunities directly with San Miguel representatives. The consultations focused on identifying qualified suppliers capable of supporting the long-term maintenance needs of MRT-7.

Industry observers view the initiative as more than a procurement event. By leveraging its operational experience overseas, Korail is creating a platform that connects Korean railway manufacturers with international infrastructure projects, helping expand the global presence of Korea's rail industry.

The partnership is also expected to establish a stable maintenance supply chain for MRT-7 while creating new export opportunities for Korean companies. As Southeast Asian countries continue investing heavily in urban railway infrastructure, successful participation in the Philippine project could serve as a gateway for Korean firms seeking contracts in neighboring markets.

Korail said it plans to continue supporting domestic suppliers by sharing its overseas operational expertise and strengthening cooperation with international project owners. The company aims to promote sustainable overseas business opportunities while enhancing the competitiveness of Korea's railway industry.

"The procurement briefing marks an important step toward strengthening cooperation among Korail, San Miguel, and Korean suppliers for the stable operation of Manila MRT-7," said Korail President Kim Tae-seung. "We will continue to support Korean railway companies in expanding their export opportunities and establishing a stronger presence in overseas markets."
