Apple has formally selected Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models as the foundation for its next-generation AI platform, marking a strategic shift in how the iPhone maker competes in the global race for artificial intelligence.

Under a multi-year agreement announced on January 12, Apple will base its next-generation Apple Foundation Models on Google’s Gemini models and cloud infrastructure, integrating them across Apple’s AI stack, including Siri and Apple Intelligence.

The move signals a major recalibration of Apple’s AI strategy. After years of attempting to modernize Siri with internally developed models, Apple has opted to accelerate deployment by leveraging Google’s mature large-model ecosystem. Industry analysts see the partnership as a way for Apple to close the widening gap with rivals such as OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic, whose models have rapidly become the standard for advanced conversational and reasoning systems.

Apple said Gemini was selected after extensive technical evaluation and stressed that user privacy will remain under Apple’s control. AI processing will continue to run on-device where possible, and on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure when cloud resources are required, ensuring that data and identity management remain inside Apple’s trust boundary.

At the center of the partnership is a long-awaited overhaul of Siri, which has struggled to keep pace with newer AI assistants. Apple plans to roll out a deeply redesigned, context-aware version of Siri in 2026 through major iOS updates, enabling more natural conversations, cross-app task execution, and advanced reasoning.

For Google, the deal offers a powerful distribution and monetization boost. By embedding Gemini at the core of Apple’s global device ecosystem, Google gains exposure to hundreds of millions of premium users across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Investors welcomed the news, pushing Alphabet’s market value above $4 trillion, briefly surpassing Apple.

The alliance also reshapes competitive dynamics across the AI industry. While OpenAI continues to expand its consumer ecosystem — including hardware projects with former Apple design chief Jony Ive — Google has secured the most valuable mobile platform in the world as a deployment channel for its models.

Some industry executives view Apple’s move as a recognition that AI has entered a phase where speed, scale, and model quality matter more than vertical integration. Even companies with deep in-house research now face pressure to partner rather than build alone.

Regulators and competitors will be watching closely. A deeper Apple-Google alignment raises questions about platform concentration, data control, and long-term competition in mobile AI — issues likely to become central in global tech policy debates.
