Samsung Heavy Industries participated in KORMARINE 2025, held at BEXCO in Busan from October 21 to 24, drawing attention for its advancements in autonomous navigation and maintenance digital technologies. Considered one of the world's leading shipbuilding and offshore fairs alongside Germany's SMM, Norway's Nor-Shipping, and China's MARINTEC, the event served as a prominent platform to showcase innovation.
On the first day of the exhibition, Samsung Heavy Industries received the Technology Qualification (TQ) for its autonomous navigation system, 'SAS (Samsung Autonomous Ship),' from Japan's NK Classification Society. TQ is an accreditation that evaluates the safety and reliability of new, innovative technologies. This marks the first time a Korean shipbuilder has obtained autonomous navigation certification from a Japanese classification society, highlighting Samsung's leadership in the field.
Additionally, on the same day, the company’s Condition-Based Maintenance system, 'SCBM (Samsung Condition-Based Maintenance),' was awarded a Product Design Approval (PDA) for Smart Machinery Health Monitoring (Smart MHM) from the American classification society ABS. The system monitors vessel conditions in real time, detects anomalies using AI technology, diagnoses faults, and enables predictive maintenance based on data.
On October 22, Samsung Heavy Industries is also set to receive Basic Certification (AiP) from ABS for its newly developed 'Surface Wave Communication-Based Fire Detection System.' This innovative system uses metal surface signals to replace complex wired systems, promising enhancements in operational efficiency and cost savings. It can also connect with smart devices for real-time monitoring.
Lee Dong-yeon, Head of the Shipbuilding and Marine Research Center at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, “Enhancing ship performance through digital technology is key to maintaining our competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry,” adding, “Samsung Heavy Industries will lead the way in smart ship technology development.”
