LS ELECTRIC is stepping up its expansion into North America after securing a qualification that allows its in-house power equipment testing facility to conduct certification-related tests under the supervision of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

The Korean power equipment maker said Wednesday that its Power Testing & Technology Institute (PT&T) has obtained Witness Testing Laboratory (WMTL) recognition from CSA.

The qualification allows LS ELECTRIC to conduct specification tests on power equipment at PT&T in the presence of CSA representatives. Test results can then be used as the basis for obtaining CSA certification, potentially reducing the time and cost involved in the certification process.

CSA certification is considered an important requirement for companies seeking to enter the Canadian and broader North American electrical equipment markets. CSA is also a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) designated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), giving it the authority to test and certify electrical and electronic products under applicable safety standards.

Industry observers say LS ELECTRIC’s newly acquired qualification could improve the company’s competitiveness in North America, where demand for power infrastructure is rising rapidly. The region is seeing increased investment in AI data centers, renewable energy projects and upgrades to aging power grids.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is particularly significant because these facilities require large amounts of reliable electricity and sophisticated power distribution systems. This is creating growing demand for equipment such as switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers and other grid-related products.

For power equipment manufacturers, meeting local safety and technical standards is a critical part of winning orders in North America. The ability to conduct certification-related testing internally is therefore expected to give LS ELECTRIC greater flexibility in responding to local customers while reducing reliance on external testing facilities.

PT&T, LS ELECTRIC’s power testing facility, is equipped to conduct tests ranging from low-voltage to ultra-high-voltage equipment. Its capabilities include high-power and high-voltage testing as well as testing against international standards.

The company plans to use the newly acquired qualification from the product development stage. By incorporating North American standards into the development process at an early stage, LS ELECTRIC expects to identify potential certification issues sooner and shorten the overall lead time from product development to certification.

Industry analysts also view the move as more than simply an administrative advantage. An in-house testing capability could allow LS ELECTRIC to respond more quickly to customized specifications requested by North American customers and accelerate repeated testing and product improvements.

The company plans to leverage these capabilities to expand its presence in North American data centers, industrial facilities and large-scale power grid projects. LS ELECTRIC is also seeking to increase supplies of higher-value power equipment as investment in the region's electricity infrastructure enters a prolonged growth cycle.

“PT&T’s WMTL recognition from CSA is another acknowledgment of our testing and certification capabilities on the global stage,” an LS ELECTRIC official said. “We will strengthen our responsiveness to North American customers and actively pursue opportunities arising from the region’s expanding power infrastructure investment.”
