Doosan Fuel Cell is accelerating its expansion into the North American market with another major fuel cell supply contract, just two weeks after securing a large-scale order from the same customer.
Doosan Fuel Cell said Tuesday that it had signed a 322.2 billion won ($233 million) contract with HyAxiom, the U.S. subsidiary of Doosan Corp., to supply phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) systems.
The latest agreement follows a 501.4 billion won contract announced earlier this month. Combined, the two contracts bring the cumulative value of Doosan Fuel Cell’s agreements with HyAxiom to 823.6 billion won, underscoring the growing scale of demand for its fuel cell systems in North America.
The systems covered by the latest contract will be supplied to North American projects in phases beginning in 2028. HyAxiom will provide engineering, commissioning and long-term maintenance and service support for the installations.
The back-to-back orders come as the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure drives a surge in electricity demand from data centers.
As AI computing becomes increasingly power-intensive, securing sufficient electricity has emerged as one of the key challenges facing data center developers. In response, operators are increasingly looking at on-site generation, allowing power to be produced at or near data center facilities rather than relying entirely on the conventional grid.
Fuel cells are gaining attention as an option for on-site power because they can be installed relatively quickly and deployed in modular configurations. This allows generation capacity to be expanded in stages as electricity demand grows.
For Doosan Fuel Cell, the latest order suggests that growing demand for data center power is translating into actual equipment purchases in the U.S. market. The company’s consecutive contracts with HyAxiom also provide a stronger foundation for pursuing additional projects as North American data center construction accelerates.
The company is also expanding its international order portfolio beyond North America. In August, Doosan Fuel Cell signed a 108.7 billion won agreement with Germany-based Reverion GmbH to supply solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks.
Including the latest HyAxiom deal, Doosan Fuel Cell has secured approximately 930 billion won in overseas orders over the past month. When domestic major equipment supply contracts are included, its cumulative order intake for the year has reached roughly 1.11 trillion won.
The company is therefore expanding its overseas presence across both North America and Europe while offering different fuel cell technologies, including PAFC and SOFC.
The shift is significant for the fuel cell industry as electricity demand from AI infrastructure creates new opportunities beyond traditional distributed power applications. As grid interconnection and transmission infrastructure struggle to keep pace with data center development, alternative power sources that can be deployed closer to demand centers are expected to attract greater attention.
Doosan Fuel Cell is expected to focus on converting its recent U.S. wins into additional orders and longer-term business opportunities. The phased delivery schedule beginning in 2028 also provides the company with a potential multi-year revenue base.
A Doosan Fuel Cell official said the latest order reflects recognition of the company’s product competitiveness and supply capabilities in the U.S. market, adding that the company will focus on ensuring reliable delivery and quality management.
With AI data centers reshaping the global power market, Doosan Fuel Cell’s consecutive U.S. contracts highlight the growing role of fuel cells in the emerging market for dedicated and on-site power generation.
