Hyosung Heavy Industries is rapidly expanding its presence in Japan’s energy storage system (ESS) market, securing consecutive large-scale projects as demand for grid stabilization and renewable energy infrastructure accelerates across Asia.

Industry officials said on May 27 that Hyosung Heavy Industries recently signed a contract with a Japanese energy developer for a high-voltage grid-connected ESS construction project valued at approximately 11 billion won.

The project involves distributed ESS installations across five major regions in Japan, including Oita, Kumamoto, Yamaguchi, Okayama, and Mie prefectures.

Under the agreement, Hyosung Heavy Industries will oversee system engineering, supply key ESS equipment, manage construction, and provide long-term operation and maintenance services after completion.

Industry observers say the deal is significant because it demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver integrated energy solutions tailored to Japan’s highly specialized power grid environment.

Japan has long been considered a difficult market for overseas energy companies due to strict grid interconnection standards and differences in electricity frequency between eastern and western regions of the country.

Building on earlier experience in extra-high-voltage grid projects in northern Hokkaido, Hyosung Heavy Industries has now expanded into high-voltage distribution network projects across central and southern Japan.

The company is also differentiating itself by promoting a full-service business model that combines engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) with long-term operation and maintenance (O&M) contracts.

Analysts say this strategy could help secure stable recurring revenue while strengthening relationships with Japanese energy operators.

Hyosung Heavy Industries’ momentum in Japan has accelerated throughout 2026. Following the company’s February contract for an extra-high-voltage ESS project in Shiranuka, Hokkaido, cumulative orders in Japan during the first half of the year have reportedly surpassed 60 billion won.

Industry experts note that Japan is becoming one of the fastest-growing ESS markets in Asia as the country expands its reliance on solar and wind energy.

Large-scale investments in energy storage infrastructure are increasing to address renewable power intermittency and improve overall grid stability.

Hyosung Heavy Industries has already established a strong position in South Korea’s ESS market. Since entering the sector in 2009, the company has maintained a leading domestic market share and completed a 336MW ESS installation at Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Bubuk substation in 2024, one of the largest projects of its kind in Korea.

The company has also accumulated operational experience through projects in countries including the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Based on its global track record, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been recognized by global energy research firm BloombergNEF in ESS industry evaluations.

The company plans to use its Japanese expansion as a gateway for broader growth in renewable energy markets across Asia and Europe.

Industry observers say the market will closely watch whether Hyosung Heavy Industries can strengthen its position as a comprehensive energy solutions provider by combining power equipment technology with large-scale ESS capabilities amid rising global demand for grid stabilization infrastructure.
