Hyundai Rotem and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) are teaming up to strengthen their capabilities in aircraft weapons and develop integrated solutions for the KF-21 fighter jet.

Hyundai Rotem said Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with KAI on Tuesday at KAI’s headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, to cooperate on aircraft weapons and strengthen the global competitiveness of South Korea’s defense industry.

Under the agreement, the two companies will combine their respective expertise in aircraft platforms and guided weapons. Their cooperation will include technology development and systems integration involving the KF-21 and other aircraft platforms, as well as long-range air-to-air missiles and other airborne weapons.

The companies also plan to identify export opportunities by developing package solutions that combine aircraft platforms with their associated weapons. They will jointly explore business opportunities in South Korea and overseas and conduct marketing activities targeting international customers.

The partnership comes as global defense procurement increasingly favors integrated packages rather than standalone weapons or aircraft. Industry observers say the ability to offer a fighter aircraft together with compatible weapons and systems can give manufacturers an advantage when competing for major overseas contracts.

Hyundai Rotem plans to contribute its expertise in guided weapons and propulsion systems, while KAI will provide its capabilities in aircraft development and platform integration. Combining the two sets of technologies is expected to strengthen South Korea’s ability to develop and supply aircraft and weapons as an integrated system.

The agreement also marks another step in Hyundai Rotem’s expansion beyond its traditional ground weapons business into aerospace and advanced propulsion technologies.

The company has been developing technologies for hypersonic propulsion and other next-generation propulsion systems. Last year, it won several research and development projects, including a methane engine technology project for reusable launch vehicles led by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement, as well as projects led by the Agency for Defense Development involving a prototype long-range air-to-air guided weapon and the HyCore hypersonic vehicle.

Industry analysts say Hyundai Rotem’s growing expertise in propulsion and guided weapons could provide a foundation for expanding its role in future aerospace and defense programs. The company’s cooperation with KAI could also create opportunities to link those technologies with aircraft platforms and strengthen the competitiveness of Korean defense exports.

“By combining our core technologies and capabilities, this partnership will help strengthen our competitiveness in future aircraft weapons,” a Hyundai Rotem official said. “We will continue expanding cooperation to enhance South Korea’s defense capabilities and technological self-reliance while contributing to the broader development of the domestic defense industry.”
