SteelX Solar Power is entering the North American integrated solar roofing market through a partnership with Swedish thin-film solar technology developer Midsummer.

The companies plan to offer lightweight solar systems that integrate directly into roofs without heavy mounting frames or roof penetrations. The solutions will target commercial property portfolios and residential developments across North America.

For commercial buildings, the companies are positioning the technology around faster installation, reduced structural loads and the ability to scale across multiple properties. Its lower weight could also expand solar deployment options for roofs that may be unable to support conventional framed silicon panels without additional structural work.

In the residential market, the partnership is focusing on homeowners and developers seeking solar generation with less visual impact. By incorporating thin-film panels into the roof surface, the system is designed to preserve a building’s overall appearance more effectively than conventional rooftop installations.

Under the partnership, SteelX will combine its structural building systems and North American market presence with Midsummer’s thin-film solar technology and manufacturing expertise. The companies did not disclose financial terms, an initial deployment schedule or projected installation volumes.

“We are pleased to partner with SteelX Solar Power to make our ultra-lightweight, flexible thin-film solar roofs available in this market,” said Eric Jaremalm, CEO of Midsummer. He said integrating solar technology directly into residential roofing could generate electricity without substantially changing the appearance of a home while reducing some of the structural and logistical constraints associated with traditional solar installations.
