Pearl Abyss’ action-adventure title Crimson Desert will take the stage at Gamescom dev 2026, where the Korean game developer plans to share the technology and production techniques used to build its expansive open world.
Pearl Abyss said Monday that three members of the Crimson Desert development team will speak at Gamescom dev 2026 on Aug. 24 local time in Cologne, Germany.
Held ahead of Gamescom, one of the world’s largest gaming events, Gamescom dev brings together game developers from around the world to exchange development technologies, production methodologies and practical experiences from major projects.
Pearl Abyss will present a session titled “Crimson Desert: How We Filled the Vast Continent of Pywel & Scaling Open World Creation with an In-House Engine.” Ahn Geun-tae, head of the Art Level Division, and engine graphics leads Kim Jin-hwan and Yoon Jin-ho will share insights from the game’s development.
The presentation will focus on two areas: the creation of Pywel, the game’s vast open-world continent, and the technologies powering the world through Pearl Abyss’ proprietary BlackSpace Engine.
The first part will examine how the development team designed Pywel to encourage exploration and discovery. The developers will discuss how natural environments were transformed into interactive spaces, how real-world terrain data was incorporated into regional design, and how automated production pipelines were used to streamline large-scale world building.
The team will also share lessons learned throughout development, including challenges and solutions encountered while creating a seamless and densely populated open world.
The second part will focus on the BlackSpace Engine, Pearl Abyss’ next-generation proprietary game engine. The developers will explain how the engine handles real-time world changes, long-distance visual rendering, atmospheric effects and environmental density across a massive open-world environment.
The session will also cover Pearl Abyss’ procedural content-generation pipeline, which enables developers to create terrain and efficiently populate regions with objects, vegetation and other environmental elements.
The presentation comes as Crimson Desert continues to build momentum in global markets. The game surpassed 6 million copies in global sales within three months of its release. It also ranked No. 2 in cumulative U.S. video game sales in 2026, according to Circana, while Alinea Analytics ranked it first in Steam revenue among new IPs released in 2026.
The appearance at Gamescom dev is expected to give Pearl Abyss an opportunity to demonstrate its technical capabilities beyond the commercial performance of Crimson Desert. As large-scale open-world games increasingly require sophisticated engines, automated production systems and scalable content pipelines, the company’s experience in developing its own technology could draw interest from international developers.
Following Gamescom dev, Pearl Abyss will join Samsung Electronics at Gamescom 2026 from Aug. 26 to 30, where the company will showcase Crimson Desert to a global audience.
