XREAL’s Project Aura to debut Snapdragon Reality Elite later this year
Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation XR platform that combines generative AI with spatial computing, intensifying competition in the emerging AI glasses and mixed reality (MR) market. Equipped with up to 48 TOPS of AI performance and enhanced power efficiency, the company aims to strengthen its position in the next era of computing platforms.
At the Augmented World Expo (AWE) held in Long Beach, California, Qualcomm Technologies introduced the Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform, its latest chipset designed specifically for extended reality (XR) devices.
The platform supports both high-performance MR headsets and lightweight smart glasses, focusing on delivering next-generation spatial computing experiences powered by on-device AI.
Generative AI Expands XR Possibilities
A key strength of Snapdragon Reality Elite lies in its AI processing capabilities.
The platform delivers up to 48 tera operations per second (TOPS) of AI performance and supports on-device execution of large language models (LLMs) and large vision models (LVMs).
By reducing reliance on cloud computing, the platform enables real-time AI-powered spatial experiences. Users can interact naturally with AI agents, place AI-generated digital objects within real-world environments, and create lifelike 3D avatars.
The platform also leverages Gaussian Splatting technology to deliver more realistic spatial representations, enhancing immersion across XR applications.
Performance Upgrades Across GPU, CPU, and NPU
According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon Reality Elite offers significant performance improvements over the previous Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform.
GPU performance has increased by up to 60%, CPU performance by up to 30%, and NPU performance by up to 160%.
The platform supports up to 4.4K resolution per eye at 90 frames per second, enabling sharper visuals and smoother experiences. Enhanced video see-through capabilities further improve the blending of digital content with the physical world.
Qualcomm also integrated its Efficient Vision Accelerator (EVA), a dedicated hardware block designed to accelerate complex computer vision workloads.
Longer Battery Life and Lower Heat
Power efficiency—one of the biggest challenges facing XR devices—has also been improved.
According to Qualcomm’s internal measurements, battery life can increase by up to 20% under similar usage conditions, while chip temperatures under heavy workloads can be reduced by as much as 12 degrees Celsius.
These improvements are expected to enable lighter, slimmer XR devices while reducing user fatigue during extended use.
XREAL’s Project Aura to Debut First
The Snapdragon Reality Elite platform will make its commercial debut in XREAL’s upcoming smart glasses, Project Aura, scheduled for release later this year.
The platform will also be adopted by Play for Dream’s next-generation XR devices.
Qualcomm plans to expand collaborations with device makers and extend support across the broader Android XR ecosystem.
Competition in Spatial Computing Intensifies
The convergence of generative AI and XR technologies is increasingly positioning spatial computing as one of the next major growth drivers of the AI industry.
Competition in the sector is expanding among Apple’s Vision Pro, Meta’s Quest lineup, and the Android XR ecosystem being advanced by Google and Samsung. As a leading chipset provider, Qualcomm is pursuing an ecosystem-driven strategy through partnerships with multiple hardware manufacturers.
As the smartphone AI race matures, AI glasses and spatial computing devices are emerging as potential successors to today’s computing platforms. Qualcomm’s latest announcement highlights how competition in AI-powered XR is evolving beyond software into hardware and ecosystem leadership.
