SK hynix has reached a historic milestone as the artificial intelligence semiconductor boom continues to transform the global technology industry.
Driven by explosive demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and expanding AI data center investment, SK hynix surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization, becoming one of the world’s most valuable semiconductor companies and reinforcing South Korea’s growing influence in the AI chip era.
On May 27, shares of SK hynix surged sharply in the stock market, pushing the company’s valuation to around 1,600 trillion won during intraday trading. Based on the won-dollar exchange rate, its market capitalization also exceeded the $1 trillion threshold.
SK hynix became only the second South Korean company after Samsung Electronics to surpass the symbolic milestone. The achievement came just weeks after Samsung Electronics itself crossed the $1 trillion mark earlier this month, underscoring the renewed global prominence of South Korea’s semiconductor industry.
Investors are increasingly focused on the structural transformation created by the AI industry. As competition intensifies in generative AI services and large language model development, global technology companies are pouring unprecedented amounts of capital into hyperscale data centers.
That trend is driving surging demand for HBM, which has become an essential component for high-performance AI computing.
Industry analysts say SK hynix currently holds one of the strongest competitive positions in the global HBM market. The company supplies advanced HBM products to leading AI semiconductor firms, including NVIDIA, creating a virtuous cycle in which strong earnings growth is reinforcing investor confidence and corporate valuation.
Brokerages have recently continued raising their target prices for SK hynix, citing rising memory prices, expanding long-term supply agreements, and accelerating deployment of AI servers.
Analysts expect the company to maintain elevated profitability over the next several years as AI infrastructure investment remains strong worldwide.
The company’s rapid rise has also elevated its global standing among institutional investors. SK hynix is increasingly being grouped alongside major U.S. technology giants and top-tier semiconductor companies in global market capitalization rankings.
Industry observers say the simultaneous emergence of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix as trillion-dollar companies reflects a broader shift in semiconductor industry dynamics driven by AI.
“In the past, CPUs and GPUs were considered the center of computing performance,” one semiconductor industry official said. “Now memory semiconductors capable of storing and processing enormous volumes of AI data are becoming equally critical.”
At the same time, experts warn that competition in the AI semiconductor market is expected to intensify further. Rivals such as Micron Technology and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are also aggressively expanding investment and technology development to capitalize on the AI boom.
An industry official said the speed of AI market expansion has exceeded earlier expectations, leading to a broad reassessment of memory semiconductor companies.
“SK hynix surpassing the $1 trillion mark is more than a stock market event,” the official said. “It symbolizes global recognition of South Korea’s competitiveness in the semiconductor industry during the AI era.”
